Closet Week Day 3: Survey the Saved

Now that we’ve weeded out the weak, it’s time to turn our attention to what remains; survey your pile of saved garments and evaluate what’s missing. The goal of course is to cultivate a wardrobe that will serve you continuously over time.

Since things can get a little confusing in the closet, I’ve enlisted the expert counsel of Liz Shneider, styling consultant and blogger at Sequin and Stripes. Pay attention, because Liz is about to break it down for us all:

Hi there Live Simply readers! It’s Liz from the fashion and style blog, Sequins & Stripes, and I am thrilled to be participating in Annie’s Closet Week by sharing a few wardrobe essentials for both men and women! One tip that I have when curating your wardrobe is to invest in the classics. A wardrobe is built on timeless pieces and accented by trends. Adding a few pieces that act as a base to an outfit will make it easy to build a closet that you can grow instead of a closet that is constantly changing. Now, on to some essentials…

J.Crew Cotton Shirt with Chest Pockets // Folk Striped Cotton Knit Sweater // Nudie Slim Denim // Gant Rugger Pleated Oxford Shorts // Polo Ralph Lauren Cotton Chinos // Ray Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses // J.Crew Leather Driving Shoes // Mougin & Piquard for J.Crew Watch

There are two looks that men should always have accessible in their closets. An outfit for day time, which should consist of a nice pair of jeans that fit well, are slimmer in the leg, and a dark wash {for both day + night!} paired with a basic tee and a nice sweater {this outfit can always pair well with shorts, too}. Then, an outfit which consists of a nice trouser pant {again, these need to have a nice fit and slim in the leg}, paired with a classic button down, belt, and loafers. Some men do not understand the importance of a good fitting pant, believe me, this can make your outfit appear a thousand times more styled and thought out.

J.Crew Silk Blythe Blouse // Loren Hope Maui Necklace // Juicy Couture Colorblock Shift Dress // Loren Hope Earrings // Madewell Sidewalk Skimmers // Illesteva Sunglasses // Kate Spade Irving Place Little Nadine Handbag // 7 for All Mankind Straight Leg Denim // Chinti and Parker Striped Top // Loeffler Randall Esther Platform // Miu Miu Sequin Clutch

Women require a bit more detail to their wardrobes to allow them to get away with very basic pieces. For example, I love the idea of a shift dress for both work and play, paired with ballet flats or heels. The silk blouse is a twist on the classic button down with a more feminine shape and looks great with a dark pair of denim {whichever shape works best for you!} or a sleek pencil skirt. If you don’t prefer to wear color in your clothing, I would definitely recommend pulling in a pop of color in your accessories, which is why I absolutely adore this pink Kate Spade handbag. Its structured shape balances out the bright hue perfectly and makes a huge statement. Finally, I always wear a fun pair of stud earrings to help polish of my look {day and night!}, which is why I adore these Loren Hope studs, and if you’re looking to glam up your outfit a statement necklace is the perfect way to do just that!

Now, to pull these pieces into outfits that you can wear now!

All pieces are sources above aside from J.Crew Men’s Belt and J.Crew Poppy King Lipstick.

When you are dressing yourself, here are a couple of things to remember:

1. Balance. You never want one side of your outfit to be too heavy, keep in mind that less is more.

2. Dress for your body type. If the clothes don’t fit, don’t wear them! I think this is the hardest thing for people to understand when going through their closets. If you want to look effortlessly styled, you have to dress for your body type.

A huge thank you to Annie for asking me to participate in Closet Week! Don’t forget to stop by Sequins & Stripes to find daily inspiration for a styled life. If you are interested in my styling services, please visit me at Elizabeth Schneider Style. xoxo
